What the hour covers

The four phases of RIFT, the order they run in, and what each one looks like sitting across from you.

The letters spell the order a relationship comes apart: the relationship tears, identity is called into question, feelings surge, thoughts become consuming. Recovery runs the other way, starting where the person actually is.

You start where they are: stuck in their head.

By the end you will be able to

• Identify which of the four phases a divorcing client is currently in
• Explain why the sequence matters, and what happens when work is attempted out of order
• Recognise the difference between feeling an emotion and processing it
• Describe anger and grief as phases of a single process rather than as problems to manage
• Name the questions a client loops on that have no answer, and why naming them is itself the intervention
• Distinguish a client's desire for a new relationship from readiness for one
