The twelve-credit course

The clients who do not move. Twelve CE credits, and the certification that says you can work with the hard ones.

The six-credit course teaches the four phases and how to read the assessment. Most of your divorcing clients are served well by that.

This course is about the rest — the client who has done the work and whose scores have not shifted, the one whose grief is tangled up with something older, the one who looks recovered on paper and is not.

Why a second course exists

A framework tells you what phase someone is in. It does not tell you what to do when they will not leave it.

Our outcome data shows the ten-week programme produces a median gain of 84 points. It also shows that gain concentrated among people who arrived struggling, and almost absent among those who arrived already coping. Different clients need different things, and the average conceals both.

The framework handles the typical client. This course is about the ones the average hides.

What the course covers

PART ONE

The client who is stuck

Reassessment shows no movement, or movement in the wrong direction. Before reaching for a new technique, work out which of several very different things is happening.

  • Distinguishing a plateau from a phase that was never actually completed
  • When a lower second score reflects deterioration and when it reflects honesty — a client defended in week one and candid in week ten will score worse for a better reason
  • Regression toward the middle in clients who began well adjusted
  • What to change, and what to leave alone and wait out

PART TWO

Anger that does not move

Anger is one of two areas that does not improve with time. Over six years it sits almost exactly where it started, while disentanglement climbs twenty points.

  • Why anger outlasts the thoughts it attached to
  • Outward anger and inward anger as the same phase presenting differently
  • Anger that is protecting grief underneath it
  • Working with clients who are ashamed of their own anger
  • When ongoing conflict with a former partner is maintaining the phase

PART THREE

Trust that does not return

The other area time does not touch, and the one where people arrive worst off. Rebuilding social trust sits at roughly half its available range across every group we measure.

  • Why trust recovers last, and why ten weeks starts this work rather than finishing it
  • Trust damage across every relationship, not only romantic ones
  • Clients who date successfully while still unable to trust
  • The narrow measurement base, and reading this subscale with appropriate caution

PART FOUR

Identity work beyond ten weeks

Identity involves patterns formed across a lifetime rather than in one marriage. A structured programme starts this phase; it cannot complete it.

  • Distinguishing marriage-shaped identity loss from patterns that predate the relationship
  • The self-worth gap in depth: shame-driven and loneliness-driven patterns, and clients low and flat on both
  • Working with the inner critic over months rather than sessions
  • Setting expectations with a client about how long this actually takes

PART FIVE

Who was left, and who left

Half the people seeking divorce recovery did not end the relationship. They arrive 48 points behind those who did, and the gap does not close at any interval we can measure.

  • Why almost the entire gap is disentanglement rather than anger
  • The initiator who appears further along and is not
  • Guilt in the person who left, and self-blame in the person who was left
  • Reading a score against norms for the client's own role and stage rather than against everyone

PART SIX

Complicating factors

What sits alongside the divorce and changes how the phases present.

  • Uncertainty as its own burden — clients who do not know when or whether the divorce will happen score below every defined stage
  • Isolation, and why the client without a workplace is the one most at risk
  • Long marriages, and why length predicts adjustment far less than expected
  • Codependency patterns and practical alternatives
  • Recognising when the presentation is outside divorce adjustment and needs a different referral

By the end you will be able to

  • Diagnose a non-moving score across several competing explanations rather than assuming deterioration
  • Work with anger and trust as areas that require intervention rather than time
  • Interpret the self-worth gap in depth and distinguish shame-driven from loneliness-driven patterns
  • Adjust your reading of any score for whether the client was left or left
  • Recognise identity work that extends beyond the scope of a structured programme, and set expectations accordingly
  • Identify complicating factors that change how a phase presents
  • Recognise when a presentation sits outside divorce adjustment altogether

Who it is for

Professionals who already work regularly with divorcing clients and want the depth to handle the ones that do not respond to the standard sequence.

It is the most clinically demanding training we offer to individual practitioners, and it assumes you are already comfortable with the framework and the assessment.

Prerequisite

The six-credit course. This course builds directly on it and does not re-teach the phases or the assessment.

Together the two courses total twelve CE credits for $994 — the full certification in the Rebuilders method for individual practice.

Continuing education credit

Licensed professionals earn twelve CE credits across both courses. Eligibility is currently pending.

Unlicensed professionals take the same course and receive a certificate of completion without the credit.

Common questions

Can I take this without the six-credit course?

No. This course assumes the framework and the assessment, and does not cover them again.

Is the twelve credits on top of the six, or including them?

Including. The two courses total twelve credits.

Does this qualify me to run a programme?

No. This is training for individual practice. Running Rebuilders programmes is a separate licensed path with its own training and an application process.

Is this the highest level of training?

For working with clients one to one, yes. The facilitator tracks are different work rather than more advanced work.

How long does it take?

Six credit hours of additional material beyond the six-credit course. Most people work through it across several sittings.
